On a young team, you need a senior to provide leadership.
Marybeth Sciolino did that, delivering a game-winning single Wednesday night as Hanover held off Douglas Freeman 2-1 in softball.
The Hawks trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh on a fifth-inning RBI by Ellie Amarante.
Erin Scarborough doubled and scored later on a a Freeman error in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Then Sciolino got a chance to knock in sophomore Erica Barrett in the eighth, and ripped it up the middle.
“My heart was kind of pounding. I’m not going to lie,” Sciolino said. “I choked up on the bat a little bit … I turned my hips and it ended up in the outfield.”
